  • With the increase in numbers of small businesses and home based businesses, it is not surprising why banks are paying a special attention to this market. Banks have introduced the use of small business credit cards which are particularly designed to cater those entrepreneurs with small business or just started up with their business.

The market for small business credit cards is relatively bigger if compared to the market for corporate credit cards and personal credit cards. When it comes to spending, small businesses generally spend more than those who own personal credit cards. Surprisingly, small business credit card holders have managed to use only about 75% from their credit limit. In contrast, most personal credit card holders have outstanding balances that use up and sometimes exceed their credit limit. This is why credit card companies are taking a closer look and doing everything they can to encourage this growing market of small businesses.

    Calling on All Small Businesses

To invite small businesses to acquire small business credit cards, bank have come up with reward systems which gives additional incentives to business credit card holders who frequently use their credit cards with all their purchases and service needs. Rewards maybe in the form of cash rebates or discounted prices from merchants and stores that have partnership with the credit card company. Free travel tickets and hotel accommodations are also given for those who earned enough points which are usually sponsored by air lines or travel agencies.

It is also remarkable that interest rates on small business credit cards have lowered these days. In the past years business credit cards have higher rates than personal credit cards. Now, credit card companies even offer 0% introductory rates on APR for small business credit cards.

    Are Small Businesses High Risk?

However, it is still a given fact that credit card issuers are still careful when granting approval to small business credit card applications. Most banks prefer businesses who already established themselves in the market for at least three years. While credit card companies want to increase their customer base, they also know that despite the positive response, small businesses are still higher risk than other borrowers

For one, most people would be more likely to default payment on their business credit card rather than default on their personal business credit card. Understandably, when faced with difficult circumstances, people would be more likely to protect their personal credit history than their business credit. Thus, credit card companies require businesses to sign up a liability agreement where business owners themselves are responsible for all transactions that will be made on that particular business account. If a business is owned by a group of people, the members of the management are required to sign up and are accountable to repay all credits that will be made using the business credit card account.

Nonetheless, small businesses are seeing the advantages that small business credit cards can bring to their business. Today, more and more applications for small business credit cards are submitted to various business credit card issuers companies. The benefits certainly work both ways. Small business credit cards make both credit card companies and small businesses happy.
