Big businesses and small businesses all depend on having an excellent credit standing to enjoy a favourable stand with lenders. Thus, when the time comes that the business needs financial assistance, lenders will easily grant assistance without questions.

However, an excellent business credit cannot be achieved overnight. It requires time and effort to build one. Below are the basic steps on how to establish a corporate credit and how to keep it in good standing.

Ensure your business entity. It’s very important to secure the legality of your business. You should clearly define your business entity whether it is a corporation, a Sole Proprietorship or LLC (Limited Liability Company). Banks often require that a business be either a corporation or an LLC to qualify for a loan.

Proof of existence. To be recognized as a legitimate business, you need to have a physical address and a business telephone number. False businesses often contact their prospects via email or mobile phone because these means of communications are easy to set up and can be abandoned easily. A real company should have a physical address where the business operations take place.

Obtain all necessary business permits and licenses. Submit all business permits and licenses required by your State.

Register for a business tax ID number. You also need to get your Employer ID Number or EIN to be able to file business taxes.

Establish your business savings account. Opening a business savings account is another important step in building a separate credit history for your company. Most banks require at least $10,000 account balance as proof of a stable business.

Establish at least 5 trade references. Make sure that your business-to-business relationships with clients and suppliers are all in good standing as you will also need to provide at least 5 references for building business credit.

Register your business with a business credit bureau. Sign up with Dun and Bradstreet to begin tracking your business transactions and start building corporate credit. Registration can be done online or you can go straight to the B & D office in your State as well.

Get a business credit card. As soon as you signed up for a business credit tracking number, you should apply for a business credit card to build your credit score. Use your credit card for business to shoulder your business expenses and be consistent in submitting your credit card payments.
